Hawkes Bay is on the east coast of the north island, New Zealand. It enjoys a warm climate and is known for its wine-making and pip fruit-growing industries. Its principal urban centre is the coastal city of Napier, which has a number of art deco buildings built after the town was destroyed in an earthquake in 1931. This architecture is an important part of the town's culture and is celebrated annually. About 20 kilometres south is the region's other principal centre, the town of Hastings. |
